WARMWATER SPEY
And why should I try it?
If you thought fly fishing was an art, wait until you hear and see about this spey casting thing.
Spey casting originated in Scotland as an application for pursuit of salmon species, and has since been applied to various scenarios across the world, including in trout spey. However, spey casting can be executed in a variety of scenarios to pursue a variety of fish species, including many of Iowa's warmwater species.
While you can practice spey casting with a double-taper (DT) fly line, it is best done with a spey specific line and either Scandi or Skagit style shooting head.
Is Spey Casting Effective in Iowa?
Short answer...Sometimes.
Spey casting in Iowa isn't for the faint of heart. It requires lots of patience to learn, limited opportunities, time, and the acknowledgement that...it doesn't always work.
It's been described as "the hardest way to not catch fish."
That being said, chasing fish while spey casting in Iowa can be incredibly rewarding.
